Honourable mention must go to St Pierre’s, the Auckland fishmonger chain who started making and selling sushi in the ’90s, complete with a special mild wasabi for the Kiwi palate and lots of greasy fillings.

St Pierre’s is so prolific that outside Auckland it’s quite hard to find sushi that isn’t St Pierre’s.

I’m not actually that smitten with the sushi here. It never seems fresh, and whatever you get always seems to come with avacado. Another important fact, chicken is not a fish, yet every sushi selection has some in.

Personally (and I’m gonna get shot down in flames now), I think Marks and Spencer or even Sainsbury’s pre-packed sushi is far better than even the fresh made stuff down here. And they don’t feel the need to dye the pickled ginger either!
